I wanted to show a world where taking flight was both wondrous and an everyday occurrence for Mollie. She might fly out to the corner shop to get some milk, and soon forget why she flew out in the first place.

Originally, I considered inventing a more generic grandmother figure, but I realised the specific eccentricities of my own grandma brought a richness that couldn't be replaced. The tartan, the custard tarts, the joy in simple pleasures that made an indelible mark on me could also, I think, resonate with those who never knew her.

Here's a photo of me and Grandma in 2003, when I was 10. I remember wanting to write a story about Grandma when I was very young, and I'm sure I spoke to her about the idea of showing her as a stop-motion character. In 2025, I finally realised that childhood ambition with a short clip produced on my animation course!
