About
Welcome to the website!

I'm Joe, a visual artist and writer/illustrator based in Ipswich, Suffolk. I am currently studying Animation & Illustration at Cambridge School of Art as a mature student.
Nothing makes me happier than playing around with characters new and old, exploring uncharted corners of my imagination. I have always had a passion for drawing comics and stories for children, following in the footsteps of the artists who inspired me as a boy.

Here's me at the age of 10 with the very first appearance of Fridge & Fly - a series of comic adventures I have happily continued working on ever since.

Writing and drawing ideas for comics led to a deeper exploration of picture books, pushing me to try more painterly kinds of illustration.

In my early twenties I wrote countless original stories as I continued to develop as an illustrator. I have included some previews of these as-yet-unpublished book ideas on the 'Illustration' page.

Fine Art
My art career has mainly involved exhibiting my work in Suffolk, showing my work at various galleries and outdoor events. I have held three solo shows at 142 Gallery, Felixstowe, where I also painted a mural for the gallery over course of a week (shown here).

Much of my work explores the atmospheric effects of light in everyday life. I tend to use charcoal and oil paint to capture those fleeting moments of magic I stumble across when I'm out for a walk.

I have experimented in all kinds of media over the years, from drawing and painting to sculpture and animation.

During my fine art exhibitions I always find ways to include my love of cartooning and illustration. For every solo show I have had to date, I set up a 'doodle wall', inviting kids and adults alike to add their drawings alongside mine. Galleries can be an intimidating space for some, so I like to introduce an area where it's safe to play and maybe draw something silly.
I look forward to sharing more of the ideas I have been developing over the years and hope to find a path to publication.
