Tone
Moving away from line, this week focused on light and shadow.

We started with some 15 min exercises in different media, capturing tone.

First, working into a dark charcoal background and picking out the lighter elements.
Second, an ink study finding the dark and light points.
Third, a collage of different tonal values.

It has been a while since I made a collage and I like the results of this quick study. Being on this course has forced me to produce imperfect work quickly, which is a refreshing change from my tendency to only put my efforts into polished final pieces.

Collage is difficult to be exact with and so it makes me look at details less, resulting in interesting graphic effects. I might think of using this for backgrounds at some point.

Here a few tone studies of scenes of various rooms and buildings. Some of these are a bit rough, though it's a good practice to just keep drawing even when I'm not feeling it.
One of these was a train journey, as I noticed the interior light of the side of the carriage opposite me. The course is pushing me to make the most of times in the day when it doesn't usually occur to me that I could be using my sketchbook.

Some of my favourite tone studies in recent weeks came from the life drawing sessions. More linked here:
